Locates
Locators are contractors who provide an onsite service to assist in specifically identifying underground services. Some asset owners or utilities will require a locator to be onsite before your works commence. Locators can provide peace of mind and confirm the presence of underground services. You are given the option to request a locator when lodging a beforeUdig enquiry if your Job Purpose is "Excavation" - see our Enquiry Details article for more information.
Not all asset owners provide locators. The beforeUdig system identifies which members do and do not supply asset locator services in your area. These details will be provided to you on your caller confirmation sheet. It is also possible that multiple locates may be requested from a single beforeUdig enquiry, depending on how many utilities in the area are notified.
The asset owner(s) will contact you once you have submitted your dig site details with beforeUdig. In most cases this is within 2 days. You will need to liaise with the asset owner once you have submitted your dig site details and received your beforeUdig caller confirmation sheet. Always quote the sequence number shown on your caller confirmation sheet to the relevant asset owner.
Standovers
A Standover is when a utility contractor comes out to observe excavation works whilst they are taking place, to help avoid damage to assets. Some Utilities will advise that a standover is required. All requests for standovers are lodged in the same way as locate requests, however, in the Notes/Description of works field on the Enquiry screen, you should include the name of the utility and advise you need a standover (e.g. "Chorus Standover required").
For Chorus:
All CHORUS locates and standover requests for the same job should be lodged as two enquiries - one enquiry for the locate, then another one for the standover.
For Vector:
Please note that beforeUdig does not lodge Vector Standovers. You will need to contact Vector directly on 0508 248 967 (select option 3). Please ensure that you have a current set of plans and to quote the sequence number.
Are there any fees for these services?
Please note that some asset owners may charge a fee to provide these services and you need to discuss these fees with the relevant utilities prior to the start of any excavation activities. If you have lodged a beforeUdig enquiry, their contact details can be found on your job confirmation email or on the Summary screen.
