The "Dig site location" section is used to search for the job site after filling in the other Enquiry Details. The location process is broken up into a couple of simple steps, the first of which is explained in this article. Please use the links below to jump to each step:
1. Search for the dig site location
2. Drawing your dig site
3. Finalising your enquiry
Search for the dig site location
You can search for the job site using 4 different options:
If at any point you wish to restart your search, simply click the Reset button, or delete the values from the fields and re-enter new search details.
Street address:
You can type the address details into the Street field and the system will provide matching options in a drop down below the field as you type. The Street field can also be used for searching suburbs themselves, rather than specific streets, to do a broader search. If you are searching for the address saved in your contact details, you can quickly populate this by clicking the Use registered address button:
Once the address has been entered, click Search to load the map on the right-hand side of the page. If the system finds more than one match, it will give options for you to choose from:
If your address is not recognised (e.g. if in a new subdivision or rural area), try searching for just the street name, or an established nearby street to bring up a general area you can use as a starting point to then pan to your location. Switching to a satellite or hybrid map view can sometimes display more street layouts than the base maps for new areas. Alternatively, you could try one of our other search options below (e.g. XY coordinates which can be obtained from Google Maps), or ring our call centre on 0800 248 344 for assistance.
Intersection:
This is similar to the Street search, but fields are provided for two streets that intersect as well as suburb/town and postcode:
XY Co-ordinates:
The two main types of co-ordinates we can use are Latitude & Longitude and Eastings & Northings.
Latitude & Longitude (Digital Degrees)
When putting decimal degrees into beforeUdig:
- X-coordinate: Will be the positive figure (e.g. 174.94933)
- Y-coordinate: Will be the negative figure (e.g. -37.06268)
- Projection/datum: Longitude / Latitude (WGS 84)
Degrees, Minutes and Seconds will need to be converted in Google Maps before they can be inputted. To do this:
- Enter the co-ordinates into the search bar in the format shown below, with a space dividing each degree/minute/second, and a comma (or a space) dividing the latitude and longitude. So for example, 36°52'55.0"S 174°51'30.0"E becomes:
- Press the search magnifying glass button or hit Enter on your keyboard. The map will load to the position, and below the search bar it will provide the equivalent decimal co-ordinates:
These co-ordinates can now be searched in beforeUdig.
Note: If you are doing an XY search and the co-ordinates aren't working, please ensure you have the X and Y fields around the correct way, you have a minus (-) at the beginning of the Y co-ordinate, and are selecting the correct Projection/Datum.
Eastings & Northings
When putting eastings & northings into beforeUdig:
- X-Coordinate: Is the easting. It will be the smaller number, with six digits and possibly a few decimal places, e.g. 654321.98
- Y-Coordinate: Is the northing. It will be the larger value, with seven digits and possibly a few decimal places, e.g. 1234567.89
- Projection/Datum: New Zealand Map Grid
Note: If you are doing an XY search and the co-ordinates aren't working, please ensure you have the X and Y fields around the correct way and are selecting the correct Projection/Datum.
GPS position:
You have the option to bypass the previous search methods altogether in favour of bringing up your current GPS position (which can be particularly helpful if you are submitting your enquiry from a mobile device at the job location).
To do this, click the GPS icon to the right of the "Dig site location" heading:
If on a browser, or if it is your first time using the GPS option, you may see some variation of a pop-up message asking to Allow or Block whether the application can see your location. If so, select Allow. The map should then load on the right-hand side of the screen with a cursor positioned over your current location according to your device's GPS.
